This is the second entry of weekly updated (bilingual) lessons on one of my favorite parts of the Japanese language, To sum up, these are four character idiomatic compounds. And that’s all you really need to know to get started. So, let’s go!

(Introduction):

Today’s four character compound is 風光明媚.

風 ふう wind/style

光 こう light

明     めい bright

媚    び flatter/flirt

風光 means scenery, and 明媚 is the beauty, particularly the kind found in nature.  Therefore, 風光明媚 is scenic or natural beauty.

例文 (Example Sentence):

There are many places of scenic beauty in Japan.
