四字熟語1:異口同音

This is the first in an entry of weekly updated (bilingual) lessons on one of my favorite parts of the Japanese language, 四字熟語(よ・じ・じゅく・ご).  To sum up, these are four character idiomatic compounds. And that’s all you really need to know to get started. So, let’s go!

ご紹介 (Introduction):

 

本日の四字熟語は、「異口同音」。

Today’s four character compound is 異口同音.

異 い   different

口 く   mouth

同     どう  same

音   おん  sound

その漢字の通り、なるを発する。つまり、たくさんの人が同じ意見を言うという意味です。

Just as the kanji indicates, different mouths making the same sound.  In other words, it means many people expressing the same opinion.

例文 (Example Sentences):

 

異口同音に賛成する。 Agree unanimously.

一同は異口同音に彼を非難した。They all criticized him with one voice.
